Family Meal Plan?

Family Meal Plan? Hmmm… Theoretically and practically that’s a good thing, really good one. But I haven’t done that, until now. I cook every day for the whole family, my children eat lunch at home, my husband brings lunch from home. It has always been stressful to find out what to cook. Breakfast, dinner, lunch, snack?? I always need ideas. I try to make lunch for two days and in max thirty minutes. I don’t like spending time with cooking, it has to be quick and easy. My older son doesn’t eat a lot of meals (baked vegetables? That’s out of question.). It’s a challenge each day to find out the menu. I’ve always asked from my family, what you would eat, what I should make for breakfast, lunch, dinner…? The answer always was: I don’t know, whatever. My husband told me sometimes, that I should do a meal plan. OK, but you should help me, give me some ideas. Hmmmmmm, yep…

It’s time now. I’ve written together a list of meals, not so much yet. I have to think about, what my older son eats, and maybe combine with some vegetables, what my little one likes. I made my first plan for this week, from Saturday to Friday.

Friday is market day in the nearby city where I can buy vegetables, fruits, meat, cheese and – the rest comes from the supermarket on Thursday.

This is the first week with the meal plan, and though there have been some changes in it, it’s less stressful. I made a chalkboard in the kitchen to write the weekly plan on, and my son reads it every day and he is happy about it. By the way he’s the one with X-Ray eyes, really. As an example he doesn’t like onions: I cut the onion into tiny little pieces and he finds them in the baked meal, all those little pieces and I always see them queued on his plate. So all meals have to be compatible with my children. It isn’t easy with my little one, too. What he eats at evening, he doesn’t eat that by breakfast. He always says: ‘I don’t like eating that at evening just for breakfast’, vice versa.

Monday and Thursday I need to consider, that while my bigger son goes to swimming course, the little one is also swimming with me, so I have to bring food for them, a lot…, they are just starving after swimming, both of them…

All meals, cookies, muffins, breads…are mostly homemade. I know no-one thanks me, but it’s definitely cheaper and with routine I can cook really fast.

Muffins and other cakes made without sugar or less sugar and honey. Snacks are fruits (apple, banana, kiwi, seasonal fruits, dried fruits…). And they do get some chocolate and candies, too. I might need to change the meal plan with each day. There can be leftovers and then we can eat that or I just don’t want to bake or cook and then I go and buy something.

I have two shopping lists, one for the market and one for the supermarket. Of course I always forget something, so usually have to go to the supermarket again… But I hope it would get better with time.
