The Frog King, story of a garden pond

Of course, a story. We always have a story.

So a little story about our garden pond, how we built it and why we have it at all. I wanted to build one for a long time. Not a big one, just a little one. They are nice and cute. And now we had the opportunity.

So it began. One day, early in the morning I went out in the garden with the children. They were looking for strawberries and raspberries. And I thought, I cloud quickly clean the pool-filter in the meanwhile. I just pulled the filter out of the pool, as I saw a frog on the inner side of it. AAhh, poor little thing. We saw he was alive, but he was in shock. Somehow the filter sucked it in (we have a special filter in the pool…). My little one was so excited and happy. He likes bugs, reptilians and everything, what could be somewhat scary for other people… and he was happy, that we have a frog, finally.

The poor frog was in a miserable condition, but we hoped, maybe he would survive this adventure. The children built a little pond for him in a bowl with water, stones. They caught some bugs for him. He always tried to move and swim a little bit. My little one pet him carefully. On the next morning they ran out in the garden, but the frog already passed away. They were very sad. And then I promised them, that we would make a little pond, and maybe on one day a frog would come and would live there or I catch one in the garden… 🙂

First I wanted to make a pond from an old big bucket. I didn’t want a big one. But at the end I bought a 250 litres plastic (yepp plastic…) pond. I dug the place for it with the children, we put some plants and stones in the pond and around the pond.

And my little one asked: where is the frog and when would be a frog in there? Hmmmm, that is a very, very good question. Maybe one day would come one? Or mommy could go in the garden at night and catch one? He was satisfied :-).

And one day went by, no frog, one week, two weeks, three weeks, no frog. But he had patience. In the meantime we went on a journey and as we were back, our pool was deep green, I had to clean it and fill up with new clean water. One morning when still just half the pool was filled, the children went out to see, just to check how long it could take until it’s full. And what I heard! Mommy, mommy, hurry, we have a frog, we have a frog in the pool. What????? I don’t believe that. But yessss. There was a happy frog in the pool. I fished it out and put into our pond. For a few weeks now he lives there. The best pet ever, he always has something to eat in the pond. And the children are happy, too :-).
